Macy's fiscal first-quarter earnings topped Wall Street's expectations on Tuesday, as the retailer said it saw early signs of momentum in its turnaround strategy. Macy's raised its full-year earnings expectations to reflect the first-quarter beat, along with the low end of its sales outlook. That's more than a quarter of namesake Macy's locations. Yet the retailer said it will invest in parts of the business that have fared better, including the roughly 350 Macy's stores that will stay open. It plans to open more Bloomingdale's and Bluemercury locations, and smaller Macy's stores in suburban strip malls.

A short seller on Tuesday alleged that beauty and wellness company Oddity Tech has been misleading investors and isn't the online-only retailer it's claimed to be. Ningi has a short position in Oddity but didn't disclose the size of that position. Oddity Tech, the parent company of makeup brand Il Makiage and skincare brand Spoiled Child, sold investors on the premise that it's disrupting the legacy beauty industry by changing the way people buy makeup online. Ningi Research is alleging that Oddity is not a purely digital company and that its Il Makiage brand has more than 40 stores in Israel, where the company is based. Oddity previously told CNBC that more than half of its business is from repeat customers.

Opinion | The Northern Lights I Did Not See

I spend a fair amount of time looking at the sky, for the sky is nearly always full of magic. What I am never looking for is the Northern Lights. Even with an extreme solar storm underway, as it was on May 10, the news seemed unlikely to affect us here in Nashville. “Northern lights become visible further south as solar activity rises — but not in Tennessee,” read the headline in Nashville’s daily newspaper. To long for a glimpse of the Northern Lights in Middle Tennessee is not a helpful exercise for the muscle that performs hope in the human heart.

Target lowering prices on 5,000 frequently bought items
  + stars: | 2024-05-20 | by ( Rob Wile | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Target said Monday it will lower prices on approximately 5,000 frequently bought items as it seeks to stay competitive amid signs consumers are experiencing price fatigue. It had already cut prices on some 1,500 other items. "Our teams work hard to deliver great value every day, and these new lower prices across thousands of items will add up to additional big savings for the millions of consumers that shop Target each week for their everyday needs." As the rate of annual inflation remains stuck above 3% and the Fed's key interest rate remains unchanged, many consumers are starting to pull back on spending and becoming more selective about what they purchase. One of Target's chief competitors, Walmart , recently signaled that even higher-income consumers were turning toward its offerings as "wallets are still stretched."

A dermatologist told Business Insider sunscreen is the most important part of her routine. Everyone's skin wrinkles as they age, but genes, UV exposure, and repeated facial expressions can govern how deep they are and how many develop. Many people turn to "antiaging" creams and beauty products to lessen the appearance of wrinkles — in 2023, facial antiaging products made over $1 billion in the US, according to Statista. But because the Food and Drug Administration doesn't evaluate beauty products for effectiveness, there's no guarantee they will reduce wrinkles. Clues from fossilized eggshells and bones have now suggested that some dinosaurs were warm-blooded and others were not. The whales produced a catalog of clicking sounds, which the researchers described as akin to a “phonetic alphabet” for sperm whales.
